Greg Ward has spent more than two decades in the Mid Atlantic reggae scene, playing alongside The Abyssinians, The Itals, Barrington Levy and Andrew Tosh, and he has been one of the hands behind the Virginia Reggae Freedom Fest as it grew. He works in roots reggae pulled from Kingston foundations, and when he plays solo he builds the whole thing live with looping gear, stacking basslines, skanks and percussion in real time so a one man set lands closer to a six piece. His full band billing is Greg Ward and The Dubsettors, with Nick Burgess on bass and Brent Finlen on drums, but a Friday Cheers slot like this is the solo looping setup.
Blue Mountain Barrel House calls itself Virginia’s first rural brewery. It has been brewing and packaging in Arrington since 2012 as the sister operation to the original Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, and it also brews for South Street Brewery. The Smokin’ Barrel restaurant is on site, and the brewery runs fried seafood specials alongside the music every Friday. Friday Cheers is free and happens weekly.
