The guest of honor is J DeBeck, known as Selector JD, one of the four selectors behind Deadly Dragon Sound. Deadly Dragon started in Chicago in 1995, moved to New York in 1998 and ran a Lower East Side reggae record shop for eleven years, building a collection north of 150,000 pieces of vinyl and acetate and issuing more than 35 limited edition 7 inch reissues along the way. Getting that catalog into a room in Virginia Beach for a night is the draw here.
Rose’s is the right room for it. It is a hi-fi bar and restaurant on Virginia Beach Boulevard built around one of the best high fidelity systems in the state, the kind of place where the sound is the reason to come rather than something playing behind dinner. Kitchen and cocktails run all night, and the room is open until 1:00 AM on Saturdays.
